The perfect gift
When kids were asked whether they remembered what they got for their last birthday, they had trouble recalling it. But they remembered perfectly well what they did with their parents that day and how it made them feel. The present didn't matter. What mattered was the joy, the happiness and the time spent together.
Invite your parents to dinner. Take them to the theater. Have a good time with your grandma. Take the woman you love on a trip. Put time into preparing a gift. Plan a surprise. Make something with your own hands.
It's hard to buy something for someone who can have anything, but surprising them with a personal gift isn't nearly as hard.
For Madzia's 30th birthday, I made a short video stitched together from clips of our life together. It meant picking footage from over 1,000 videos and spending 16 hours editing it with a buddy.
A friend made the best gift I've seen in a while. She took a photo from our photo shoot, where we were goofing around in front of the camera, and painted a picture of it by hand! It looks amazing! I look at it every day. The photo shows it in the making.
While I'm at it, let me recommend David Fincher's great movie The Game, about a surprising gift for a millionaire. Starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. Don't even spoil the fun with the trailer. Just start watching. Great cinema from 1997.
